THE +1 ACADEMY: WORKING WITH STRANGERS • advanced
Working on stage with audience members is one of the most challenging yet rewarding formats in Improv. It tests your skills as an improviser while providing an enriching experience that can bring more than just laughter to an audience. In this workshop we learn how to perform with audience members in long form shows, creating strong and memorable shows without any gimmickry. Learning Outcomes: creating a safe space on stage; working with “no” – handling blocking and denying; knowing how to create narrative with an untrained performer.
GO THROUGH THAT DOOR! • for everyone
Improv is all about relationships, and relationships are all about emotion. Improvisers often get stuck in their hand concerned with where a scene is going, what should happen next or if their ideas are even good enough. In this workshop, we learn that no matter what scene you are in, relationship and emotion trumps all. We will quite literally use a door to realise that relationships trump EVERYTHING! Learning Outcomes: learn to commit more authentically and realistically; stronger emotions, deeper relationships; utilising Game in a relationship driven scene; heightening tension.
THE ART OF TRUTH & AUTHENTICITY IN IMPROV • advanced
The race to find the funny in improv can often leave us exhausted and up in our heads. With grounded improv, we strive to find authenticity between characters and relationships. We learn how to slow things down. As improvisers, we become more honest. Characters become deeper and more meaningful. Relationships become more realistic and true to life. The narrative comes from the connection between the characters rather than created by the actors. All characters and scenes are grounded in reality and there are less space monkeys in the closet! In this course we learn to let go. We ditch the suggestions from the audience, we ditch conflict, we ditch the “who, what, where and when”. Instead we try to discover who our characters are and why they are in this scene. Learning Outcomes: perform organic scenes and characters through listening and reading our stage partners; build more realistic characters; display and utilise physical space to influence character and scene.
